Spies, Dynamite and Victorian Terrorism

As part of Edinburgh Spy Week, Historian Niall Whelehan and literary scholar Penny Fielding will talk about the Irish Nationalist bombing campaign in Britain in the 1880s. They will discuss the causes and effects of the campaign and how these were reflected in the fiction of the day, including Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Dynamiter.

Niall Whelehan is a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde and author of The Dynamiters: Irish Nationalism and Political Violence in the Wider World, 1867-1900, a transnational history of the Fenian dynamite campaign of the nineteenth century.

Penny Fielding is a professor at the University of Edinburgh and a director of Spy Week.
